FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

No experience whatsoever is required. Many of our students have never set foot on ice when they book their first lesson. Our instructors are trained to start from the very beginning — balance, falling safely, and your first steps — and work entirely at your pace.

No. Most rinks offer skate rentals at the door. For your first few lessons, rental skates are completely fine. Your instructor will actually help you assess whether rental or owned skates are right for your current level, and guide you when it's time to buy your own pair.

Most students are gliding confidently by the end of their first lesson. After 3–5 lessons, students are typically stopping, turning, and navigating the rink without assistance. The rate of progress depends on natural athleticism, age, and practice frequency — but Nova students consistently surprise themselves with how quickly they improve.

Absolutely. Nova teaches students aged 3 through 104. Our youngest students start with fun, game-based skating fundamentals, while adult beginners get a more technique-focused approach. All lessons are adapted to the student's age, fitness level, and learning style.

Yes — that's one of the core benefits of Nova. You browse available instructors in your area, read their bios and credentials, and choose the one that feels right for you. You also select the rink where you'd like to skate. Some rinks have restrictions on outside instructors, so we recommend contacting us first to confirm availability.

Rink schools offer group classes on a fixed schedule at one location. Nova offers private or semi-private lessons with certified instructors you choose, at rinks you choose, on a schedule that works for you — for 20–60% less than typical rink school pricing. Every lesson is customized to your specific goals and current ability, not a predetermined group curriculum.
